Non-Accidental Injury - Patterns and Prevention Child abuse is a significant health issue. New Zealand Research shows that only 20% of children killed by inflicted injuries came from families previously known to Child, Youth and Family. Most if not all of these children where known to Health. This session will provide health professionals with a brief synopsis on the current evidence on the identification and management of non-accidental injuries. This session will provide practical guidance on practice issues including history taking; physical assessment; documentation and consultation pathways. Intended audience: This will interest health professionals wanting an introduction to the practical management of the child who may have experienced abuse and neglect. Emma Barnes is a Nurse Specialist at Te Puaruruhau, Starship Children Health. Te Puaruruhau is Auckland Regional Health service for children and young people who have experienced abuse and neglect. This service is located in Puawaitahi, A multi Agency centre with police and Child, Youth and family established to enhance the recovery and care of those affected by child abuse. She is a member of both the Paediatric Society and Doctors for Sexual Abuse care. She also presents for the Brainwave, a charitable trust that aims to increase public awareness on infant brain development. |
