Antenatal Care - What Do We Need To Know?

The GP or nurse is often the person women go to confirm a pregnancy. How does the current system work? What Lead Maternity Care (LMC) choices do women have and how does primary care fit into this?

This session explores the multitude of screening tests on offer and at what gestation to order them. 2008 brought changes in recommendations for screening for Downs Syndrome and HIV. Addressing smoking in pregnancy is high on the ministry of health's agenda. I will discuss the "harm reduction" approach where NRT is now advocated. I will look at the various scenarios you may encounter in Primary care and when transfer to hospital is required. A brief overview of financial claiming and how Section 88 incorporates Primary care will also be covered.

Intended audience: This session is suitable for anyone providing hands on care for pregnant women
