“Is this normal?” – when to act and when to relax
Common Paediatric Conditions in General Practice

This session will focus on common conditions in childhood that present to the general practice.  The focus will be on what is the normal range and what is of concern, when to intervene and when to relax. It will include a range of vignettes and examples. Areas covered may include topics such as common skin lesions, dental problems, head shapes and fontanelles, motor and neuro-developmental issues, coughs and constipation.
 
Audience: primary health care staff who are at the front line  for seeing everyday childhood issues

Biography: Marguerite is a UK-trained trained community paediatrician, and has now been in New Zealand for the past 11 years, mainly working in South Auckland.  Her passion is for treating the whole child and family, working in community settings (loves doing clinics in schools, church halls, kindys and home visits), working as part of a health care team rather than in isolation.  Her desire is to keep all children well and help them to fulfill their fullest potential and much of her clinical work is with children with special needs.  She is medical advisor to IMAC, and outside of these interests has 3 growing boys of her own.

Biography: Nikki is a General Practitioner, Director of the Immunisation Advisory Centre (IMAC) and a Senior Lecturer in the Division of General Practice and Primary Health Care, University of Auckland. Nikki specialises in primary health care, preventive child health issues and immunisation. Nikki has developed and evolved the Immunisation Advisory Centre since its inception in 1996. She has ongoing involvement with short term international consultancies with the World Health Organisation and other NGOs around immunisation and child health.
